On August 9th, 1956 over twenty thousand women from all over the country protested in front of the Union Buildings, in order to get a "pass book" law abolished. The said law was an attempt to restrict non white women on where they could live, work or travel. The march was led by former Mandela's wife and partner, Winnie, and current spouse Graça Machel, the widow of late Mozambican president Samora Machel. Early in the morning, women started pouring in. Estimated in the tens of thousands, they came in via hundreds of buses, some dressed in tradional others in more modern clothing. BBC online has detailed pictures.
